I am currently studying the Master of Education degree, majoring in Teacher Librarianship through the Queensland University of Technology. At the beginning of last year, I was fortunate to receive a position at my school’s library as Teacher Librarian. Prior to this I was a classroom teacher for twelve years. I have quickly learned that what is being taught through the degree and what is happening in my work place, are two very different things.
Studying a subject such as Designing Spaces and Learning has been enlightening, challenging and empowering. As a result, I have found myself questioning the design of my school’s library. In doing so, I have been challenged to rethink and envisage how changes could be made to enhance what is already happening in the learning spaces of the library.
This website presents my own reflections of who and what is valued, in mine and other school settings. As you follow the links to the different pages of the website, you will be taken on a tour of the library where I have highlighted both positive and negative design aspects in my learning space. The critical commentary under Meaning Making examines policies and research and how these have an impact on library design and improving learning spaces for school communities.
The website will not end here. I have recognised a particular design flaw at my school’s library which in the coming weeks of this subject, I will be making recommendations to tackle the design problem.
